Clifford Bentley joined the Staffordshire Constabulary on 21 May 1939. After his war service he was promoted temporary Sergeant in January 1954, and Sergeant the following year. He was a member of the British Police Unit in Cyprus with the rank of Detective Inspector, from February 1956 until December 1957. Whilst stationed in Cyprus, Bentley was wounded by a bullet in his left side, in an ambush at Famagusta. He transferred to the West Midlands Constabulary in April 1966, and retired on 26 May 1969.
