Henry Marchant, a gardener’s labourer, was born in Bromley in 1875 and attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment at Woolwich on 12 January 1894. Posted overseas to India and Malta, he transferred to the Mounted Infantry on 15 January 1904 and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with £5 gratuity per Army Order No. 286 of 1912. Marchant was subsequently discharged at his own request after 18 years’ service whilst suffering from inflammation of the neck glands.
