James Durant attested for the East Surrey Regiment and served with them in South Africa during the Boer War. Following the outbreak of the Great War he attested for the 8th (Post Office Rifles) Battalion, London Regiment, and served with them on the Western Front from 18 March 1915. Advanced Sergeant, he was awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal per Army Order 275 of August 1919.
