Andrew Arrowsmith, a native of Whitchurch, Shropshire, attested for the Royal Field Artillery and served with the 2nd Brigade during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 September 1914. He was killed in action on 23 April 1917, and is buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. A letter written to his mother by the Chaplain of 42 Battery, 2nd Brigade, following his death, recalls how he died a soldier’s death, in action, and in striving his best and his hardest for his country.
Sold with letters of condolence to the recipient’s mother from both the Commanding Officer and the Chaplain of the 42nd Battery; and other ephemera.
