William Frederick Sandwith was commissioned Ensign in the 3rd Bombay European Regiment and served during the Great Sepoy Mutiny with the 1st Brigade Central India Field Force in 1858, being present at the siege and storm of Jhansi (Medal with Clasp). He subsequently served with the 15th Bombay Native Infantry during the Second Afghan War in 1880 (Medal). He transferred to the Retired List on 23 December 1887, and was granted the honorary rank of Major-General.
