Thomas Clifford Newbold was commissioned into the Derbyshire Regiment and served with the Volunteer Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. Afterwards serving with the 5th (Territorial) Battalion, he was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1915 ( London Gazette, 29 January 1915). He saw further service during the Great War on the Western Front from 28 February 1915 to 11 November 1918 on the General Staff, and for his services was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order and was three times Mentioned in Despatches. Subsequently advanced Lieutenant-Colonel, he died in Derby in 1942.
