Francis John Davies was born on 1 May 1791, youngest son of Thomas Davies of New house, co. Hereford 1751-92, late Advocate General at Calcutta. He was appointed an Ensign in the 52nd Foot on 3 February 1808, becoming Lieutenant in January 1809, and Captain in August 1813. He served in the Peninsula with the 52nd and was present at the battles of Fuentes D’Onor, Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Pyrenees, and at the storming of Badajoz, 6 April 1812, on which occasion he was wounded (War Medal with five clasps).

Davies was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Grenadier Guards from 30 April 1827 until 18 May 1841, when he was placed on half-pay, becoming Colonel the following November. He was appointed Colonel of the 67th Foot on 15 January 1858, and promoted to General on 14 January 1866. General Davies died in London on 4 December 1874.
