George Alexander Paulin was the son of Sir David and Jessie Elizabeth (McNeill) Paulin of 44 Moray Place, Edinburgh. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh at the time of the Boer War. As a medical student he interupted his studies and went to South Africa with the Scottish (Edinburgh and East of Scotland) Hospital. Returning to complete his studies he gained the L.R.C.P. Edin. and L.R.C.S. Edin., 1903 and L.R.F.P.S., Glasgow, 1903. He later resided at Malpas, Cheshire.
