Delhi Durbar 1911, silver (3792 Sgt. E. McGarry, L.N. Lanc. Regt.), old engraved naming, edge bruise, very fine £100-120

Edward McGarry enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Preston in July 1892, aged 18 years, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion. He subsequently served in the Boer War and was one of five other ranks in the 1st Battalion to receive the Delhi Durbar Medal in 1911, and was discharged at Kirkee, India in the rank of Sergeant in December 1913. His service record further notes his entitlement to the L.S. & G.C. Medal.

Recalled by his old regiment in August 1914, McGarry transferred to the 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers in April 1915, in the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major, and saw action in France, being awarded the D.C.M. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has rendered splendid service and shown great energy and determination at his work during a long period’ (
London Gazette 1 January 1918 refers). He was demobilised in April 1919.
