Robert Donaldson was born on 3 April 1893. Living in Main Street, Dreghorn, Ayshire, he was a Butcher by trade. He entered into the Clyde Division R.N.V.R. in April 1915, becoming a Leading seaman in August 1915 and a Petty Officer in April 1917. Posted to Egypt with the Drake Battalion in September 1915, he was admitted to Alexandria General Hospital suffering from Dysentry in October. Posted then to Gallipoli in November, he was wounded, receiving a gunshot wound to a finger on his right hand in early December. He was invalided to Egypt and after recovering was posted to Mudros and thence to England. He was granted a temporary commission as Sub-Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R. with seniority of 30 January 1918 and in April was posted to the Drake Battalion in the B.E.F.
