An unusual Great War replacement ‘crowned head’ D.C.M. group of four awarded to Company Sergeant Major W. H. Elwick, 511th (London) Field Company, Royal Engineers

Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. 2nd ‘crowned head’ issue (554007 C.S.M., R.E.); 1914-15 Star (852 Cpl., R.E.); British War and Victory Medals (852 W. O. Cl. 2., R.E.); Territorial Efficiency Medal, G.V.R. (554007 C.S.M., R.E.) all medals additionally officially inscribed with the word ‘duplicate’ after the naming, good very fine and better (4) £800-1200

D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1920 ‘He, by his example and devotion to duty, in charge of sections, when officers were not available, has carried out his work with excellent results.’

Sold with copy m.i.c. confirming that he first served in France on 12 December 1914.

As Company Sergeant Major Elwick gained his award of the D.C.M. for services during the Great War, he should have been issued with a replacement G.V.R., uncrowned variety D.C.M.
