James Hayes was born in Preston, Lancashire. A painter by occupation, he attested for service in the Royal Artillery at Liverpool on 25 June 1856, aged 18 years. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, he was discharged on 21 July 1875 at the termination of his second period of limited service. Sold with copied discharge papers.
