Samuel Brindley was born in Devonport, on 21 April 1864. A Boiler-maker by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on the Indus on 24 April 1885. He was confirmed in that rank in September 1886 whilst on the Cambridge and was advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in January 1889 when on the Neptune; E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1892 when on the Racoon, and E.R.A. 1st Class in April 1897 when on the Undaunted. Although Brindley served on the Racoon, April 1892-June 1894, the recipient was not entitled to the ‘Witu 1890’ clasp, the ship not being present. Sold with copied service paper and roll extract.
