Mark Anthony Hammond was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 23 December 1959. An Upholstry Sprayer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines on 4 October 1977. He served with Salerno Company, May 1978-March 1979; R.M. Poole, March 1979-February 1980; H.M.S. Tamar, February-April 1980; H.M.S. Rothesay, April 1980-August 1981, and with 40 Commando R.M., August 1981-October 1982. He qualified as a Ship’s Diver in 1980. Hammond served with 40 Commando R.M. during the Falklands War; sailing into the South Atlantic aboard the Canberra. He was discharged on 29 October 1982, having given notice.

Sold with recipient’s Green Beret with cap badge; Certificate of Service; Royal Marines Company Record Book; Royal Navy Divers Log Book; Parachutist’s Provisional Log Card - showing 10 ‘jumps’; Inflatible Raiding Craft Certificate of Competence; Landing Craftsman 3rd Class Certificate; ‘Son of the Sea’ Certificate; ‘King Neptunes Certificate’ for crossing the Equator aboard S.S. Canberra, 4 July 1982; Certificate of Discharge. Also with the book, War in the Falklands [Sunday Express Magazine team] and a number of photographs, including group photos entitled, ‘109 Troop King’s Squad’, in which he is identified; another entitled, ‘H.M.S. Rothesay Ships Detachment R.M. Poole August 79, in which he is identified as ‘Strops Hammond’; in another photograph (which is featured on the front cover of the above book), Hammond is shown as one of the men of 40 Commando raising the flag at Port Howard on the West Falklands.
