H.M.S. Aurora was an Armoured Cruiser of 5,600 tons, built in Pembroke Dockyard and launched in October 1887. A total of 258 officers and other ranks of the ship were entitled to the China Medal with single clasp ‘Relief of Pekin’.

M.I.D. London Gazette 11 April 1919. Recommendation reads, ‘This officer has carried out his duties as Senior Officer of Destroyer Escorts with much zeal & ability’. - when a Commander, R.N., on the Ossory.

Cecil Rupert Hemans was born in Cornwall on 20 September 1883. He entered the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet on 15 September 1898. He became a Midshipman in November 1898. As a Midshipman on the Aurora, he served at Tientsin with the Naval Brigade. Hemans was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in May 1902, Lieutenant in September 1904 and Commander in June 1917. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 November 1922 and was promoted to Captain (Retired) in September 1928. Sold with further copied service details.
