Musketier Johann Philipp Kuhn was born at Dauborn, Unter-Lahn, Nassau, on 21 December 1845. A Linen Weaver by occupation, he was called up for military service as an Ersatz Reservist 1st Class on 22 July 1870. Posted to the 2nd Company, Ersatz Battalion, 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment 87; he served with the 10th Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment 87, from 24 September 1870-24 May 1871. He joined his regiment in the field in France on 24 September 1870. The regiment formed part of XI Corps (21st and 22nd Divisions) under Lieutenant-General von Bose and took part in the advance on and siege of Paris, September 1870-January 1871, including the protection of Versailles during the battle of Malmaison, 21 October 1870. The XI Army Corps was stationed between Versailles and Bievre throughout the siege. The regiment also took part in the march through Paris on 1 March 1871. On 25 May 1871, Kuhn returned to the 2nd Company, Ersatz Battalion, 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment 87, and remained with that unit until discharged to the Reserve on 8 July 1871. He was transferred to the Landwehr in October 1872 and was finally discharged from the Landwehr on 1 October 1879.
