William James Smith was born in the Parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Middlesex. A Gas Fitter by occupation, he attested for service in the 54th Foot on 1 September 1870, aged 24 years. He was promoted to Armourer Sergeant and transferred to the 72nd Highlanders on 27 February 1877. With them he served in India and Afghanistan, October 1871-August 1882 and Egypt, August-October 1882. Also awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal, he was discharged on 7 April 1890. Sold with copied service papers, copied account book, photocopied photograph and a copied letter to Smith from Neville Chamberlain, A.D.C. to Sir Frederick Roberts.
