George Hill Stokes was born on 18 September 1888. After service as a Trooper in the 12th Reserve Cavalry Regiment, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 19 December 1915. Advanced to Lieutenant, in the latter part of the war he was attached to the Intelligence Department of the War Office, being part of M.I.1E involved in signals intelligence, code breaking etc - his fluency in German being particularly useful in this regard. Post war he served as a Captain (D.A.P.M.) in the Rhine Army of Occupation. Employed as an Advertising Agent between the wars, he was commissioned a Lieutenant (Temporary Captain) in January 1940, and posted to D.H.Q. for special duties in Intelligence in March that year and subsequently served in the South African Intelligence Corps. Promoted to a War Substantive Captain and Temporary Major in August 1946. Sold with copied service record and other research.
