John Philip Chilton was born in Marylebone, London, on 22 August 1897. An Assistant Carpet Cutter by occupation he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 2 June 1913. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in January 1914, he was serving aboard the 2nd Class Cruiser Lowestoft when the war began. He was on the vessel and present at the battles of Heligoland Bight, 28 August 1914, and Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915. Transferred to her sister ship, the Birmingham, in February 1915, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in August 1915 and Able Seaman in February 1916. As such he served on the Birmingham at the battle of Jutland, 31 May-1 June 1916, the ship forming part of the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron attached to the Battle Cruiser Squadrons. After a period at Pembroke I, November 1916-August 1917, he served the latter part of the war aboard the Armoured Cruiser Shannon, August 1917-January 1919. Serving in the Second World War, he was mentioned in despatches in 1944 as a Temporary Boatswain for service on the battleship Anson. Sold with copied service paper and other research and several postcards and photographs of the ships on which he served.
