Private Frank John Pullen, 28th Battalion London Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 January 1915. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment on 26 May 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 13 May 1915. He was wounded on 24 August 1915. Transferring to the Royal Flying Corps, he was appointed a Flying Officer on 24 September 1917, with seniority from 13 May 1916. Serving as an Observer in R.E.8’s of No.53 Squadron, he is several times mentioned in the Squadron Record Book.

23 March 1918 - R.E.8 2nd Lieutenant Hutcheson/Lt. Pullen, Escort Duty, ‘Escort to Lt. Napier on NF Patrol. 2 E.A. (two-seaters) attacked formation. One drum fired at them, when they made off West’.

24 March 1918 - R.E.8 2nd Lieutenant Hutcheson/Lt. Pullen, Escort Duty, ‘Dropped four bombs .... D.T. Miles was shortly afterwards seen to go down in a side slip and a machine suspected to be his was seen crashed on ground. Lt. Napier went down to investigate and I (Hutcheson) followed him down to 1500 feet. The observer (Pullen) was then hit in the leg by machine gun fire from the ground...’

As a result of his wounds, Pullen was invalided to England. He was transferred to the Unemployed List on 28 February 1919. Sold with copied research.
