The Currency Act of 1927 prepared the way for the issue of legal tender currency carrying a vignette of Lady Hazel Lavery. At the same time it made further provision for eight joint stock banks to be admitted as shareholding banks in a parallel issue of consolidated bank notes, namely the Bank of Ireland, the Hibernian Bank, the Munster & Leinster Bank, the National Bank, the Northern Bank, the Provincial Bank, the Royal Bank and the Ulster Bank. Quickly identified as the ploughman series, these notes were issued from 1929 to 1940
