Charles I (1625-1649), Tower mint, gold Crown, Gp D, mm. anchor (flukes to right on obv., upright on rev.), bust 5, ‘die flaw’ after ma’, 2.21g/9h (SCBI Schneider 250, same dies; SCBI Brooker –; N 2185; S 2715). Lightly creased with a few obverse scratches, otherwise good very fine, probably much as struck, a very rare variety (£350-400)
SCBI 57 notes that Schneider did not know of this variety when he wrote his classification in 1959 (BNJ 29). On this specimen the ‘die flaw’ after ma can clearly be seen as a large contraction mark stamped over an erroneous letter d
