Henry Lemon(d) Gill was born in Huntingdon in about 1840. He enrolled as a Volunteer in the Huntingdon Militia on 31 August 1858, from which he was released in January 1859 to enlist in the 37th Regiment. In February 1861 he transferred to the 7th Foot, with whom he served until his final discharge on 14 February 1879, when he was ‘in possession of four good conduct badges also India (North West Frontier 1863) Medal with clasp for Umbeyla & medal for long service & good conduct with Gratuity and fourth class certificate of education.’
Gill was subsequently in the service of Birmingham Prison as a Warder. For these services he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal (London Gazette 2 October 1906). Sold with copy service papers and other research.
