Stanley Victor Furey joined the Army in about 1912. As a Staff Sergeant in the R.A.O.C. he received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1930 (A.O. 195 of October 1930). He served on the North West Frontier of India as a Warrant Officer, Class II, and was later promoted Armourer Sergeant-Major, subsequently being granted a Regular Army Emergency Commission on 17 April 1941 as a Lieutenant (Assitant Inspector of Armourers) R.A.O.C. On the formation of the R.E.M.E. in May 1942, Furey was transferred to that Corps, becoming a War Substantive Captain in April 1944. In August 1946, he was appointed (from a Regular Army Emergency Commission in R.E.M.E.) to a Short Service Commission as a Captain (Ordnance Executive Officer) in the R.A.O.C.. He resigned his commission in January 1949 and the following year received the Military Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Regular Army); this award was promulgated in the London Gazette of 23 June 1950, but the actual date of his award was 10 December 1948.
