Frederick Wright Giles was born on 10 January 1863, and joined the Royal Artillery in January 1882. He served as a Battery Sergeant-Major at the Relief of Chitral 1895 and in South Africa during the Boer War. He received the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1902 (A.O. 15 of January 1902), was promoted (Regimental) Sergeant-Major, R.G.A., in January 1904, and awarded the M.S.M. in 1905 (A.O. 5 of January 1905). Sergeant-Major Giles went to pension on 1 January 1909. During the Great War he was granted a commission as Temporary Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry in February 1916, and became Adjutant of the 21st (Reserve) Battalion, D.L.I. He relinquished his commission in August 1919, and was granted the rank of Captain.
