D.C.M. London Gazette 16 January 1919:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 11th August 1918, east of Rosieres, the advance of one of the sections was held up by an enemy machine gun. This man proceeded alone, outflanked the position, killed one of the crew, and captured two of the enemy together with the machine gun. His prompt and determined action saved many casualties.’

Michael Maloney was born in Genoa, Italy, on 1 December 1897, son of Celestine Milone. At some point prior to the outbreak of war his family emigrated to Canada and assumed the surname Malone, although this was most likely the result of a phonetic imposition at the point of entry. He attested at Brockville on 21 February 1916, and joined the 156th Battalion, C.E.F., arriving in England at Liverpool in the S.S.
Northland on 28 October 1916. He served in the Western Front in the 38th Infantry Battalion, winning the D.C.M. for gallantry at Rosieres in August 1918. Maloneyreturned to Canada in June 1919 in H.M.T. Olympic, sailing from Southampton for Halifax. He was discharged at Ottawa on 16 June 1919, but continued to serve in the Royal Canadian Regiment. He received the L.S. & G.C. medal (Canadian Gazette 13 December 1941) and, after serving in the Second World War, was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration as a Sergeant in 1951 (Canadian Army Order Issue No. 226 of 16 April 1951). Sold with comprehensive copied service records.
