George Sackville Cotter was born on 14 February 1859, a grandson of Major G. S. Cotter, 69th Foot, a veteran of the Peninsula and Waterloo who afterwards settled in Canada and became Colonel of the 5th North York Militia. Cotter was engaged in the North West Mounted Police on 9 June 1879, previously a farmer living at Dunville, Ontario. During his service he was stationed in the North West Territories at regina and Wood Mountain in Saskatchewan, and at St Mary’s, Fort Walsh, Fort Macleod, Cardston, and Pincher Creek in Alberta. He was one of the members of the Force who welcomed the Mormon pioneers to Western Canada in the 1890’s. Cotter was promoted to Corporal in March 1882, to Sergeant in August 1882, and to Staff Sergeant in July 1901. He was awarded the bronze Coronation Medal on 5 November 1902 and also received a grant of $300 for his services in the Riel Rebellion. Cotter took his discharge from the Force on 30 April 1904. He died at Dunville, Ontario, on 16 December 1947, aged 88. Sold with comprehensive copied service records and news cuttings.
