John Hinton was born in Plymouth, Devon. A Seaman by occupation and a member of the Sub Mining Militia, he attested for service with the Devonshire Regiment on 23 December 1887, aged 21 years, 6 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, December 1888-June 1893. Not the best behaved member of the battalion, he was convicted of striking a superior in November 1889 and imprisoned. The following year he was convicted of using threatening language. His papers record that he was further imprisoned by his commanding officer in July 1894. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1894. Recalled to service with the 2nd Battalion in October 1899, he served in South Africa, October 1899-January 1901, being discharged on 20 January 1901. Sold with copied attestation papers and summary of service.
