Samuel Stanley was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, and living in Exeter, Devon, enlisted at Plymouth. Serving initially with the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment and attaining the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class, he later transferred to the 2nd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment, ranked as Company Sergeant-Major. With them he won the Russian Cross of St. George 4th Class (London Gazette 15 May 1917). Serving in Mesopotamia he was killed in action on or about 25 March 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. Sold with Commemorative Scroll named to ‘Coy. Serjt. Maj. Samuel Stanley, Dorsetshire Regt.’; also with copied research.
