Marshall enlisted in the Manchester Regiment in November 1914, together with 41 workmates from Ashton Brothers’ Cotton Mill, Newton Street, Hyde, which body of men went on to form a platoon the 20th (5th Pals) Battalion. Embarked with his unit for France in November 1915, he would have served on the Somme and at Ypres, prior to the unit’s departure for Italy at the end of 1917 (see R. Pacey’s article on the Ashton Brothers Mates Platoon in the O.M.R.S. Journal, Winter 1987, for further details, and a group photograph including Marshall).
