Three: Sergeant J. Adamson, Manchester Regiment

1914-15 Star
(17277 Sjt., Manch. R.); British War and Victory Medals (17277 Sjt., Manch. R.), good very fine and better (3) £60-80

James Adamson, who was born in 1874, enlisted in the Manchester Regiment in November 1914, together with 41 workmates from Ashton Brothers’ Cotton Mill, Newton Street, Hyde, which body of men went on to form a platoon in the 20th (5th Pals) Battalion - sold with a photocopied group photograph of the Platoon, including Adamson. Embarked with his unit for France in November 1915, he served on the Somme and at Ypres, but was discharged, aged 43 years, in December 1917, and awarded the Silver War Badge (see R. Pacey’s article on the Ashton Brothers Mates Platoon in the O.M.R.S. Journal, Winter 1987, for further details); although his MIC entry registers the issue of a duplicate 1914-15 Star in 1921, the above described award appears to be entirely as issued.
