James Nash was born in Cowley St. John, Oxford and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in March 1900, aged 18 years. Posted to the 4th Battalion in Dublin, he was embarked for South Africa in December 1901, where he qualified for the above described Medal & clasps - which awards were presented to his unit by General F. R. Elrington at Chatham in July 1903. Nash, who went on to serve in Malta for two years, was placed on the Army Reserve in February 1908 and was finally discharged in May 1912.
