Captain Lord Avonmore, and Sergeants P. H. Fleming and A. Grant were the only men of the Hampshire Regiment to serve on the Nile, with the Egyptian Army.

Albert Grant was born at Barrow, Lancashire, and enlisted for 40th Brigade at Gosport on 20 May 1879, aged 19. He transferred to 1/Hampshire Regiment in July 1881, and became Sergeant in April 1883. He embarked for service with the Egyptian Army on 20 February 1884. Promoted to Colour-Sergeant in November 1886, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion in February 1888, and received his L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 gratuity in 1897. He was finally discharged as Acting Sergeant-Major from the Permanent Staff of the 4th Battalion, Territorial Force, at Exeter on 27 January 1909. Sold with copy discharge papers.
