Fewer than 10 M.S.M’s. with ‘1848’ below the Queen’s bust are believed to have been awarded to the Army.

Henry Whearing was born in the Parish of St. Michael’s, Woodplumton, Preston, Lancashire. A Weaver by trade, he attested for the 17th Regiment at Preston on 5 September 1825, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served 5 years, 3 months in New South Wales and 11 years, 3 months in India. He attained the rank of Serjeant-Major in February 1846 and was awarded the M.S.M. with an annuity of £10 in 1848. He was discharged on 13 March 1849 as ‘being unfit for further service’.
