Alfred Edward Buncher was born in Aston, Warwickshire on 8 March 1892. A Gentleman’s Servant by occupation and a member of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Dorset Regiment, he attested for service in the Dorsetshire Regiment at Dorchester on 14 February 1910. Joining the 1st Battalion, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion in September 1911. He was transferred to the Indian Unattached List as a Sergeant on 12 December 1913. He served in India, September 1911-September 1916; Mesopotamia, October 1916-April 1918; India, April-July 1918; Mesopotamia, July 1918-June 1921, then to India again. As a Sergeant in the Supply and Transport Corps he took part in the wartime operations in Mesopotamia. For his services during the Great War and after he was three times mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 27 August 1918, 5 June 1919 and 9 September 1921). In June 1926 Buncher was appointed Sub-Conductor and then advanced to Conductor in December 1927. He was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1929. Buncher was granted a commission as a Lieutenant (Assistant Commissary) on 1 January 1937 and in November 1939 he was promoted to Captain (Deputy Commissary). During the war he held the rank of Temporary Major in July 1941, being advanced to that rank in May 1942. Major (Commissary) Buncher retired from the Army on 3 December 1946 and died on 14 August 1978. At the time of his death he resided at Oadby, Leicestershire. Sold with original M.I.D. Certificates (3); Warrant Document appointing him Sub-Conductor; Commission Document appointing him Lieutenant; award certificates for the Jubilee and Coronation Medals, and a quantity of copied research.
