Daniel Lynch was born at Cappa, near Castle Gregory, Co. Kerry, on 16 September 1856. He emigrated to New Zealand and enlisted in the Armed Constabulary on 9 September 1881, being soon after posted to the Armed Constabulary post at Opunake. In December 1882 he was transferred to the Armed Constabulary Depots at Wellington and Taupo. He was transferred to the Militia on 4 April 1885. The Permanent Militia was established formally with the passing of the Defence Act of 1886. Lynch was promoted to 1st Class Gunner in April 1889, Acting Bombardier in May 1891, and Corporal in February 1897. He was awarded the New Zealand Permanent Militia L.S. & G.C. Medal on 14 October 1895 and was awarded the New Zealand L.S. & G.C. on 8 December 1899 - his medal being the 32nd to be issued. Lynch was promoted to Sergeant in June 1900 and in October 1902 he was transferred to the R.N.Z. Artillery. Sergeant Lynch, becoming medically unfit, was discharged on a pension on 21 February 1905. He was in addition awarded the New Zealand Meritorious Service Medal, this published in the New Zealand Gazette of 20 January 1910.
