Southern Lucania, Southern Lucania, Kasaria, Stater, c. 450, astragalos, retrogade kaza rio above and below, rev. dolphin right within border of radiate parallel strokes, 7.16g/10h (HN Italy 2033; Garrucci pp.153-4, pl.111, 1-2). Forepart of dolphin missing, otherwise very fine and extremely rare; the first specimen ever offered in a public auction and the only example in private hands (£7,000-8,000)
Kasaria is an unidentified city of southern Italy known only from its silver coins, struck on the Achæan weight standard. The only other recorded examples are in the museums of Vienna (inv. 2452) and Naples (S 6303), the Naples piece being clearly overstruck on a Kroton stater
