Richard Godfrey was born on 3 April 1867 in the Parish of Chorlton, Manchester. A Clerk by occupation and a member of the 1st West Yorkshire Artillery Volunteers, he attested for the 18th Hussars at Aldershot on 3 December 1888, aged 21 years, 8 months. With them he was posted to India in November 1889. In October 1898 he was transferred to the 9th Lancers Unattached List. He was promoted to Sub Conductor in the Indian Miscellaneous List in August 1904 and advanced to Conductor in June 1911. Godfrey was promoted to Assistant Commissary and Lieutenant in the Indian Miscellaneous List in June 1916 and during the Great War served in Mesopotamia, 25 November 1915-27 June 1918. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 19 October 1916), and his name was ‘brought to the notice of the Government of India for valuable services rendered in India in connection with the war up to the 4th August 1917’ (Gazette of India 3 June 1918). Lieutenant (Assistant Commissary) Godfrey retired on 3 April 1922. Sold with riband bar and copied research.
