Archibald Stanley Allen was born on 3 May 1894. He entered the Great War as a Sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the South Midlands Brigade, R.F.A. (T.F.) on 30 November 1915. In February 1916 he was transferred to the South Midland Division Ammunition Column. Allen was promoted a Temporary Lieutenant on 2 May 1916 and was confirmed in that rank on 1 July 1917. He resigned his commission whilst retaining his rank on 17 June 1921. After the war he worked in Nigeria as an Accountant in the Nigeria Civil Service. He was appointed to the Public Works Department on 27 February 1929. He was appointed an Accountant in the Accountant-General’s Department in October 1936. Continuing his military service, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Regular Army Reserve of Officers in September 1928 and, in Nigeria, a Lieutenant in the European Reserve of Officers in April 1930. For his service he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Nigeria), notified in the Nigeria Gazette of 17 March 1938, there described as Assistant Treasurer in the Accountant-General’s Department

In The Efficiency Decoration, by J. M. A. Tamplin, 62 Efficiency Decorations (Nigeria) are listed, gazetted between the years 1936 and 1959.
