Richard James Derrom’s service in the New Zealand Militia commenced in about 1893. In 1899 Derrom was granted a commission as a Lieutenant in the Victoria Rifle Volunteers (Auckland) which was ‘A’ Company of the 1st Battalion Auckland Infantry Volunteers (Countess of Ranfurly’s Own). As such, he was awarded the New Zealand Volunteer Service Medal in 1906, this being notified in General Order 88 of March 1906. The 1st Battalion was later re-titled the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment ) (Countess of Ranfurly’s Own). In 1909 he was awarded the New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal. In 1913 Captain Derrom was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces L.S. Medal, this published in the New Zealand Gazette of 27 March 1913. In the Great War Derrom served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, being appointed a Captain in July 1917 and struck off the strength in January 1919. In 1917 he was granted the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration, this published in the New Zealand Gazette of 19 April 1917.
