James Stevens was born in Brighton, Sussex. A Painter by occupation, he attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at Brighton on 22 September 1894, aged 19 years, 3 months. With the regiment he served in India, September 1895-April 1898 and in South Africa, September 1901-September 1902. In November 1902 he was transferred to the Army Reserve, and was discharged from the Army in September 1906. Sold with copied service papers.
