Jasper Cecil George Nicolls was born in Donnybrook, Co. Dublin, on 21 February 1898. As a Medical Student he attested for the Army at Dublin on 16 December 1916, aged 18 years, 240 days, having previously served in the Dublin University Officers’ Training Corps. Posted to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, he was discharged to a commission in the 10th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers on 31 July 1917. Serving with his battalion in France, he received a gunshot wound to his chest and abdomen on 20 November 1917 (1st day of the battle of Cambrai) and was invalided to England on 22 December. Recovering, he was posted to the 7th/8th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in March 1919 and thence to the Chinese Labour Corps in September 1919, having been promoted to Lieutenant on 1 February 1919. He was demobilized in June 1920. After completing his medical training at the National University of Ireland, he gained the degrees of M.B., B.Ch. and B.A.O., 1924. He was commissioned into the Royal Air Force on 28 January 1925. He attained the rank of Group Captain on 1 October 1946, was awarded the Coronation Medal as Group Captain with No. 62 Group Home Command, and retired from the service on 1 February 1955.
