Joseph Oldfield was born in York on 20 July 1827. Passed out from Addiscombe in December 1843 as 2nd Lieutenant; Lieutenant, 10 February 1846, and served in the Punjab Campaign 1848-49. He resigned his commission on 13 April 1858.
