William Doble was born in October 1810 in St Stephen’s Parish, Saltash, Cornwall, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Devonport in October 1832. He was promoted to Sergeant in April 1846 and awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in March 1854. He served 24 years 171 days, including 7 years 1 month in the West Indies, and was discharged at Woolwich from the Royal Invalid Artillery on 24 March 1857, ‘Quite worn out by length of service.’
