Lieutent W. Smeeth served in British, German and Portugese East Africa, Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia from 8 February 1916 to 1 May 1917. He was Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 30 June 1916 and awarded the Military Cross.
British Battles and Medals states that 58 Africa General Service Medals, with clasp for Somaliland 1902-04 were awarded to the Telegraph Section of the Royal Engineers.
