South Africa 1834-53 (James Crawford, 90th Regt.), together with an identical medal (Pte. J. Crawford, 90th Regt.), the second medal renamed in an official style, the first with some edge bruising, generally very fine (2) £300-350

The South Africa 1853 Medal, by G. R. Everson lists two men by this name as serving with the regiment and being entitled to the medal, and further states that one of them additionally received a re-named replacement medal.

No. 484 Private James Crawford was tried by a regimental court martial in 1840 for having been drunk and making use of disrespectful language against LieutTulloch. He was convicted and sentenced to 16 days solitary confinement and forfeiture of all advantages of previous good conduct for two years. Sold with 9 copied pages of service papers.
