(Military) Knight Commander’s set of insignia, neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; breast star, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, reverse inscribed, ‘Lindsay Bryson, 3rd March 1981, with neck cravat and evening collars in Garrard, London case of issue; The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knight of Grace set of insignia, neck badge and breast star, silver base metal and enamel, star with enamel damage; with neck cravat and lapel badge, in case of issue; Defence and War Medals; Jubilee 1977, these unnamed and mounted as worn; together with a mounted set of five miniature dress medals, as above, in base metals (’Bath’ lacking reverse centre), generally very fine and better (lot) £1200-1500
Lindsay Sutherland Bryson was born on 22 January 1925. He was educated at Allan Glen’s School, Glasgow; and London University (External) where he gained a B.Sc. in Engineering. Latterly he was a F.I.E.E. and F.R.Ae.S. Bryson joined the Royal Navy in 1942 as an Engineering Cadet and served during the war as an Engineer Mechanic. He became a Midshipman in 1946, Lieutenant in 1948; Commander in 1960 and Captain in 1967. After the war Bryson trained in the United States in the maintenance and operation of Airborne radars, and served with the Fleet Air Arm squadron on the carrier Eagle. His shore appointments were mainly at the Ministry of Defence at Bath. As a Lieutenant-Commander he served on the cruiser Tiger and later on the guided missile destroyer Fife. He commanded H.M.S. Daedalus, R.N.A.S. Lee-on-Solent, 1970-71 and was Director of Naval Guided Weapons, 1973; Director of Surface Weapons Project (Navy), 1974-76, and Director-General of Weapons (Naval), 1977-81. Bryson was promoted to Commodore in 1975; Rear-Admiral in 1977; Vice-Admiral in 1979; and Admiral in 1983. During 1979-81 he was Chief Naval Engineering Officer. For his services he was created a K.C.B. in 1981. He was appointed Controller of the Navy, 1981-84. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1985. Bryson was also Chairman of the Marine Technology Directorate, 1986-92; Deputy Chairman of G.E.C.-Marconi, 1987-90 and was director or official of a number of other concerns. In later life he received a number of honorary degrees - D.Sc. Strathclyde, 1987; D.Sc. Bristol, 1988; LL.D. Sussex, 1995. In 1989 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex and in 1990 he became a Knight of St. John. Admiral Sir Lindsay Bryson, Royal Navy, died on 24 March 2005.
With the recipient’s uniform: full dress frock coat complete with shoulder boards, and trousers, the former with Gieves & Hawkes label named to ‘Sir Lyndsay (sic) Bryson, L/9/89 100/4394 PU’. With riband bars and copied research.
