Claude Alexander Edgar Loader was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on 23 April 1891. A Fisherman by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 19 February 1907 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in October the same year. He served on the cruiser Fox, May 1908-July 1910, being promoted to Ordinary Seaman in April 1909 and Able Seaman on April 1910. During this time he saw service off Somaliland and in the Persian Gulf for which he was awarded the A.G.S. and N.G.S. medals.

With the onset of the Great War he was based on Attentive II, August-September 1914. He was on the light cruiser Birkenhead, August 1915-August 1916, the ship being present at the battle of Jutland where it formed part of the 3rd Light Cruiser Squadron. He later served aboard the battleship Emperor of India, September 1916-January 1917. His final service was aboard the light cruiser Challenger, October-December 1918. He died of Influenza on 12 December 1918 and was buried in the Bagamoyo Road War Cemetery, Dar-es-Salaam, Tanganyika.
