Patrick Butler was born in the Parish of Maid Gap, near Callan, County Kilkenny, and attested for the 41st Regiment at Cork on 4 November 1850, aged 20. He served overseas 3 years and 2 months at Malta, and 1 year 2 months in the Crimea. He was sent home to England from Scutari on 22 February 1855, and was discharged, unfit from further service, on 2 October 1855.
