John Harry Harker had earlier witnessed active service in the Great War, originally having entered the French theatre of war as a Corporal in the 1/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, in March 1915. Subsequently commissioned in the 13th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, he ended the War as a Captain.
